The impact of COVID-19 containment measures on road traffic in the Netherlands
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, society and economy were posed many restrictions. Immediately after the announcements of containment measures, the road traffic demand in the Netherlands decreased about 40%.
The National Datawarehouse for Traffic Information (NDW) started a weekly monitor on the impact of the containment measures on road traffic. Three months later at the end of June, most of the measures were loosened, although the social distancing rule still needs to be considered.
In this article, we intend to review three months of data analysis and to integrate the gained knowledge and insights. The NDW monitor summarized the road traffic patterns, where we distinguished between motorized road traffic in general and freight traffic in particular and added bicycle traffic and traffic speeds.
