Benefits for authorities and users

More and better information will enable road authorities to manage traffic more effectively, resulting in an improved utilization of infrastructure. They will be able to improve coordination of supply and demand and will have the ability to influence the flexible use of certain roads with tools such as rush-hour lanes and traffic control coordination. Furthermore, the improved geographical coverage of traffic data will allow road authorities to conduct a truly joint network management. Road authorities will also be able to inform the public by means of roadside information screens, pillars etc. In addition, the air quality in ‘urban canyons’ can be actively improved by controlling the through-flow of traffic in these areas. Finally, dangerous situations in the city will be actively influenced.

Because the National Data Warehouse allows long-term storage of the traffic data collected, road authorities can also use the data in the long term for:
- improved scheduling of management and maintenance
- development and substantiation of the traffic policy and infrastructure.

For cities, regions and provinces where traffic data is not yet being collected or is only being collected to a very limited extent, the main benefit of the NDW is that traffic management will become possible where it currently is not. This means that road authorities can take a leap forward in implementing their mobility policies. In cities, regions and provinces where traffic data is currently already being collected, it will also be possible to look across districts to see what is happening on the road, anticipate developments and take joint action. This is network management that will result in considerable social benefits. Implementation of the NDW on a national scale will avoid creating the same data warehouses, organizations and sub-tenders at dozens of different locations. NDW becomes the central desk for all market parties, such as service providers, making it easier for them to obtain traffic data.

In addition to road authorities, the aforementioned service providers will also use the basic information in NDW. For a fixed yearly fee they will be able to purchase complete and cohesive basic information from NDW for the services they provide to road users.
