Structure and functioning of NDW
Three quality levels for data gathering have been defined, each with an indicative average price per kilometer. These levels are based on the likelihood of problems and their effects on traffic in the network. For main roads or junctions, the highest level of information is required, while for quiet provincial roads, a lower level suffices. The information collected is forwarded to NDW over high-speed data connections. The information is then gathered in a single large physical database and is connected, improved and subsequently distributed. The users of NDW are road authorities (traffic control centers) and service providers (suppliers of traffic information to road users). The data can be used for two different applications:
- traffic management (road authorities intervene in traffic)
- traffic information (improved information for road users).

NDW uses a growth model. This means that at the beginning not all roads in the Netherlands will be included in the database. The aim is to cover the entire relevant road network in the Netherlands within a few years. The map below is a (preliminary) overview of the future NDW basic network (with the current forerunners).
